Press Release: HACSU welcomes Equal Pay funding commitment by Gillard Government
05-Jul-11
The Health and Community Services Union (HACSU), one of several unions collaborating in the Equal Pay case, welcomes today’s announcement by the Federal Gillard Government to fund their proportion of any pay increase awarded by Fair Work Australia.
HACSU members affected by this decision are employed in Victorian non-government organisations as disability support workers and mental health workers in psychiatric disability rehabilitation support services (PDRSS).“We welcome the Gillard Government’s commitment to support equal pay for women by funding their portion and committing to funding the outcome of the Equal Pay case” says Lloyd Williams, State Secretary.
“Our members working in the non-government sector are paid between 17% and 30% less than their colleagues in the public sector who do the same work and have not suffered the same undervaluing.
This case is an opportunity to address the imbalance and recognise the incredible contribution that Victorian Disability and Mental Health PDRSS workers make to the lives of some of Victoria’s most vulnerable citizens.
However, whilst we are pleased with today’s announcement, we renew our call upon the State Baillieu Government to fuly fund their share of the outcome of this historic case.”
